GreatGas scoops ‘Best Oil Company Initiative’ for its fully unmanned self-service filling station concept at

Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards 2011

Great Gas Petroleum (Ireland) Ltd, the nationwide fuel supplier which operates Ireland’s only fully unmanned self-service station, has scooped the award for ‘Best Oil Company Initiative’, at Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards 2011, for its fully unmanned self-service filling station concept.

The Irish Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards are designed to reward professionalism and entrepreneurial spirit in retailing, reward innovation and commitment while, at the same time, helping to raise industry standards.

GreatGas’ revolutionary 24/7 ‘pay-at-the-pump’ forecourt opened in Santry, in Dublin, two years ago and has been a huge success ever since. Until recently, only diesel was available at GreatGas 24/7 on the Old Airport Road in Santry, Dublin 9 as dispensing petrol on an unmanned forecourt was prohibited by Irish law. This legislation has now changed and petrol is now on offer at the outlet. The addition of petrol to the forecourt has provided extra convenience for customers, particularly those on early and late flights to and from Dublin airport and tourists who need to fill up before returning their rental cars.

Ray O’ Sullivan, Managing Director of GreatGas, says they are delighted with the award win.

“We are thrilled to have received this award in recognition for our efforts in being the first to market with this unmanned concept in Ireland and we are also delighted that we can now sell petrol as well as diesel at our unmanned forecourts. Our philosophy is quite clear – reduced fuelling times, reduced overheads, reduced fuel prices and more happy customers. Safety and security is paramount at all times on the site. We have 24 hour monitoring via CCTV and a security firm, as well as the latest environmental management systems. In addition, customers can’t drive-off without paying for the fuel, as payment is first authorised by the bank on their debit or credit card.”

“We are now well advanced with plans to roll out three more outlets around the country in the coming year and we are also open to approaches from other existing forecourt owners who are interested in partnering with us on this new business model.”

GreatGas 24/7 ‘pay-at-the-pump’ forecourts provide customers with quick and hassle free petrol and diesel, twenty four hours a day all year round. The facility could not be easier to use! You simply drive onto the forecourt, insert your credit, debit or fuel card at the pump and select the amount of petrol or diesel you require. You are then asked to enter your card’s security pin number and this will unlock the pump and you can begin pumping the fuel. After dispensing the requested amount of fuel, you will be provided with a receipt.

GreatGas worked with Tokheim, the international fuel retailing solutions provider, to bring the concept to Ireland. Tokheim has already implemented the service across Europe, with an estimated 20,000 ‘pay@pump’ terminals now in place across the continent.

_MG_0119Fuel supplier GreatGas has agreed a €250,000 deal with Tokheim, an international provider of fuel retailing systems, to open three new unmanned service stations in the next 12 months.

GreatGas opened Ireland’s only unmanned service station on the Old Airport Road in the Dublin suburb of Santry two years ago. Ray O’Sullivan, managing director of GreatGas, said the company planned to partner with forecourt owners around Ireland to open more unmanned stations in the coming months.

‘‘We are now well advanced with plans to roll out three more outlets around the country in the coming year and we are also open to approaches from other existing forecourt owners who are interested in partnering with us on this new business model," said O’Sullivan.

Tokheim has about 20,000 unmanned ‘pay@pump’ terminals in place in Europe. Paul Farren, general manager of Tokheim Ireland, said the number of service stations in operation here had dropped by 10 per cent year-on-year for the last decade.

‘‘There are now just over 1,200 service stations in the Republic and many are on the verge of closure," Farren said. ‘‘But this new ‘pay-at-the-pump’ business model has given them renewed hope for the future of their business. In addition, many who have already closed are also considering re-opening on this basis. This revolutionary concept could save their business."
